Ask P K Das, a professor at Delhi University, and he will tell you his encounter with monkeys. “There was a family of monkeys sitting and two of them were in my way,” he says, “I must have been about 10 yards away. “I have come across monkeys in the University, but they had never attacked or harmed me so I did not pay much attention. As I got closer, a monkey jumped on the fence and then on to my shoulder. Before I could react, he had my left ear in his mouth.” It took 42 stitches to attach Das’s ear back to his head. “University authorities were informed and they came up with the temporary solution of hiring langurs to chase away the monkeys,” says Das. The moment monkeys see a langur, they get scared. “In jungles, monkeys and langurs live together. But here, the langurs are trained to scare monkeys away,” says Faiyaz A Khudsar, wildlife expert.
