Egyptian superstar and beloved comedian for decades, Adel Imam, has urged actors and writers not to worry themselves on charges placed against him for producing films, plays allegedly defaming Islam.
Imam was awarded a three-month jail term with hard labor in February for his ‘derogatory’ portrayal of Muslim characters on stage and screen. Imam was also awarded a fine of approximately $166 for “defaming Islam” in some of the roles he has played. He is currently waiting for an appeal against his case.
The famous comedian known for his work like “The Leader,” which is listed as one of the pieces of work he has produced that defames Islam, told the Arab Drama Writers Association that they should not preoccupy themselves with this case, but focus on defending freedoms.
The actor said in an interview published in the Kuwait-based newspaper, Al-Rai, that while he believes in the freedom of expression and the absolute right for others to criticize film and art work, it should not mean that they can stop creativity. “Actors should defend their art and creativity and the audience should show support too.”
The Arab Drama Writers Association held a meeting on Tuesday in Egypt to discuss risks facing their community and the possibility of a crackdown against freedom.
Imam, who is considered to be one of the Arab world’s biggest film stars, with 40 years of box office hits in and plays under his belt, was sentenced in absentia in February.
